Skin Care Remedies: Do It Yourself!

Skin care remedies are so important in keeping your skin health and radiant. Your skin is your body’s biggest organ so it is key to take great care of it. Although there are many skin care products that are sold in stores, there are many efficient skin care remedies that are already in your cupboards and refrigerators.

You can whip up homemade moisturizers, masks and balms that will keep the whole body soft and supple throughout the year! Do it yourself skin care means that you get to control what ends up on your skin and save money!

Here are some recommended ingredients for at home skin care remedies:

  • Jojoba: The chemical make up of this oil is very similar to our own natural moisturizing sebum. It can be found at your local pharmacy or health food store. After showering or bathing, pat skin dry, and then massage your entire body with a thin layer of oil. Allow the oil to penetrate your skin for five minutes before you get dressed.
  • Honey: Honey is a natural humectant that keeps the moisture in, which makes it ideal for hydrating skin and hair. For a quick and easy moisturizing mask, simply warm a jar of honey in a pot of hot water and then smooth the warmed honey across the face. Be sure that the honey is not too hot. Let it sit for 15-20 minutes and then remove with warm water.
  • Oats: Keep a carton of old-fashioned oatmeal in your pantry to use as a bath additive that will keep dry skin at bay. Oats have been used for centuries as skin-pampering ingredients in facial scrubs, body scrubs, masks and anti-itch remedies. For a moisturizing bath, add one cup of oats to a drawstring bath bag. Pull the string tight and put the bad in a tub of warm water. Jump in and squeeze the bag to release the milky oat essence. Soak for about 20 minutes and gently rub the oat bag over your entire body, pat dry.
  • Olive Oil: To reduce static in your hair add a bit of conditioning gloss by pouring ¼ teaspoon of extra virgin olive oil into your palm, rubbing your hands together and lightly running them through and over dry hair. Use a little more if your hair is past shoulder-length.
  • Avocado: The fruit that’s often mistaken for a vegetable is packed with hydrating oils, protein and vitamins. A ripe avocado can be instantly transformed into a moisturizing mask. Simply mash one with a form and apply it to clean skin.
  • Coconut Oil: If there’s one ingredient you should always have handy, its coconut oil. This is a multitasking lubricant for moisturizing dry hair and nails and is effective in cooking. Simply apply organic coconut oil to the extra-dry sections of your body.

Skin Care: Should Your Routine Changes with the Seasons?

Anti-Aging: Stem Cell Therapy

Scientists at the Buck Institute for Research on Aging and the Georgia Institute of Technology have shown they can turn back the biological clock in human adult stem cells, which helps regenerate old or damaged tissues.

The September edition of the journal Cell Cycle published the study which notes that understanding the molecules and processes that enable human adult stem cells to initiate self-renewal and to divide, proliferate and then differentiate in order to rejuvenate damaged tissue might be the key to regenerative medicine and an eventual cure for many age-related diseases.

According to modern day stem cell hypothesis of aging, living organisms are as old as its tissue specific or adult stem cells.

Scientists believe that if they discover a way to keep these adult stem cells young, they could possibly use these cells to repair damaged heart tissue after a heart attack, heal wounds, correct metabolic syndromes, produce insulin for patients with type 1 diabetes, cure arthritis and osteoporosis and regenerate bone.

Normally, adult stem cells undergo age-related damage. And when this happens, the body is unable to replace damaged tissue, leading to a diseases and conditions.

Researchers therefore attempted to devise methods that could keep these adult stem cells young, which could possibly be used to repair damaged tissue after injury or major illness.

“We demonstrated that we were able to reverse the process of aging for human adult stem cells by intervening with the activity of non-protein coding RNAs originated from genomic regions once dismissed as non-functional ‘genomic junk’,” said Victoria Lunyak, associate professor at the Buck Institute for Research on Aging

The scientist’s findings were based on the fact that body cells experience a shortening of the caps found at the ends of chromosomes, known as telomeres. But adult stem cells are known to maintain their telomeres. Much of the damage in aging is widely thought to be a result of losing telomeres.

As a cell ages, the telomeres get shorter, similar to a fuse burning down. But adult stem cells tend to maintain these fuses. The team therefore hypothesized that DNA damage in the genome of adult stem cells would look very different from age-related damage occurring in regular body cells. Their belief was that these repair stem cells could be aging by a different mechanism.

“We found the majority of DNA damage and associated chromatin changes that occurred with adult stem cell aging were due to parts of the genome known as retrotransposons,” said King Jordan, associate professor in the School of Biology at Georgia Tech.

“Retroransposons were previously thought to be non-functional and were even labelled as ‘junk DNA’, but accumulating evidence indicates these elements play an important role in genome regulation,” he added.

They found that as we and our adult stem cells age, 65 percent of the DNA damage in self-renewing adult stem cells occurred within small sections of DNA called “transposable elements” or “retrotransposons”, co-author King Jordan said.

While the young adult stem cells were able to suppress transcriptional activity of these genomic elements and deal with the damage to the DNA, older adult stem cells were not able to scavenge this transcription.

The new discovery suggests that this event is harmful for the regenerative ability of stem cells and triggers a process known as cellular senescence.

“By suppressing the accumulation of toxic transcripts from retrotransposons, we were able to reverse the process of human adult stem cell aging in culture,” said Lunyak.

“Furthermore, by rewinding the cellular clock in this way, we were not only able to rejuvenate ‘aged’ human stem cells, but to our surprise we were able to reset them to an earlier developmental stage, by up-regulating the “pluripotency factors” or the proteins that are critically involved in the self-renewal of undifferentiated embryonic stem cells.” she said.

The team plans to analyze and validate the extent to which rejuvenated stem cells may be useful in clinical tissue regenerative applications.

The risk of acne is especially high in women approaching menopause, but anyone can get pimples at any age. This is why you should choose a facial cleanser that is gentle and will not dry out your skin as it cleans. Use it once or twice a day, such as when you first wake up and before you go to bed.
  2. Keep up your skin’s circulation: One of the easiest ways to improve your skin is by improving your circulation. The simple way to do so is by exercising. Sports like golf and swimming are often great for older adults, but even stretching or taking walks may help increase circulation throughout the body. If you do not like to work out much, or have not seen any improvement in your skin despite regular exercise, note that massages and showers can often achieve the same results.
  3. Increase intake of good foods: Certain types of food may improve your skin at any age. For example, fiber can help ensure that your body has the right balance of bacteria so that there are no internal issues because constipation and similar condition may negatively affect your skin. If you want to look healthy on the outside, you need to be healthy on the inside. This means you need to drink plenty of water. This is one of the simplest ways to stay generally healthy. If you are tired of drinking water all day, consider adding flavoring to make your drink a little more exciting. You should also increase your intake of fruits and vegetables to get the increase water and improved health you need for skin that looks good.
  4. Take care of dry skin: Not only does dry skin not look very attractive, but it can also become itchy and irritating. Fortunately, there are products on the market to take care of the issue.   • Dry brush skin smoothing system: Dry brushing is an old technique that exfoliates the dead, dulling skin cells that accumulate on your body. Use a dry brush to sweep off skin cells to renew texture and improve circulation.
  • All-natural body scrub: It is very easy to achieve touchably soft skin at home. Just scrub the skin with a simple mix of oatmeal and honey. Rinse with warm water and follow with moisturizer.
  • Homemade acne fighter: A pumpkin mask works for a clearer and brighter complexion. It contains enzymes that help heal and draw impurities from the skin, making it ideal for those with acne.
    • ½ can plain pumpkin (not pie filling)
    • 1 six ounce container plain yogurt
    • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice (the just of about ½ a lemon)
  1. Combine ingredients in a bowl and stir.
  2. Cleanse the face and body in the shower and towel dry.
  3. While seated on a towel on the side of the tub, apply the enzyme mask onto your body and face. Wait 20 minutes, and then rinse the mask off with lukewarm water.
  • Bath time bliss: Mix 2 cups of Epsom salt with a few drops of fragrance and food coloring or ½ teaspoon of glycerin. Add to the water in a standard-sized bathtub. Soak for at least 12 minutes, three times weekly. For a refreshing scent, add a few drops of eucalyptus oil.

  2. Try natural exfoliants like yogurt, papaya, and pumpkin: You can find plenty of options for natural dry skin care in your kitchen or in the produce and dairy aisles of your supermarket. Yogurt, especially the plain Greek variety, makes an excellent cleanser with a mild exfoliating action that will remove dry skin and leave you feeling refreshed and comfortable.
  3. Apply some olive oil: Olive oil is known to instantly groom dry cuticles and work wonders on your hands and elbows. When you’re skin feels extra parched, dab a thin layer of organic extra-virgin olive oil under your moisturizer for an extra dose of antioxidants and food fatty acids.
